Planning a trip to Australia? Whether you're exploring its iconic cities, vast outback, or stunning coastlines, knowing a few key details beforehand will help make your journey smooth and enjoyable. Here’s what you need to know before you go.

GETTING AROUND:

Car Rental

While renting a car can be a fantastic way to explore regional Australia, it’s not always necessary in major cities. Traffic congestion, parking difficulties, and well-connected public transport networks make car rentals impractical in cities like Sydney and Melbourne. However, if you're heading into the countryside or coastal regions, renting a car is highly recommended. Most highways are well-maintained two-lane roads, and GPS is readily available in rental vehicles to ensure easy navigation.

Domestic Flights

Given Australia’s vast size, flying is often the most efficient way to travel between destinations. Domestic airlines, including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and Rex, operate frequent flights between major cities and regional hubs, making it easy to get anywhere quickly.

Train Travel

Australia boasts several iconic rail journeys, perfect for those who prefer a scenic and leisurely way to travel.

  • The Ghan – A breathtaking journey from Adelaide to Darwin, crossing the Red Centre through Alice Springs.

  • The Indian Pacific – A transcontinental adventure from Sydney to Perth, traversing the vast Nullarbor Plain.

  • Other Regional Trains – Many states have efficient rail networks connecting cities and towns, offering a comfortable way to travel. Longer journeys often include sleeper cabins, allowing for a relaxing and immersive experience.

Visas & Entry Requirements

  • Unless you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, you will need a valid Australian visa to enter the country. New Zealand passport holders can apply for a visa upon arrival in the country.

  • All other travellers must obtain a valid visa before departing their home country.

  • Tourist visas and working holiday visas are available through Australian Embassies and Consulates, or Journey South Travel can assist with applications.

Money & Currency

Australia’s national currency is the Australian Dollar (AUD), with the following denominations:

  • Banknotes: $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100

  • Coins: 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, and $2

Credit cards are widely accepted, and ATMs are easily accessible throughout the country. Contactless payments via Apple Pay, Google Pay, and tap-and-go cards are also commonly used.

Tipping Culture

Tipping in Australia is not compulsory, as wages in hospitality are generally higher than in many other countries. However, it is appreciated for excellent service.

  • In upmarket restaurants, a 10% tip is common.

  • Rounding up taxi fares or leaving small change at cafés is a nice gesture but not expected.

  • Hotels do not add service charges to bills.

Final Travel Tips

  • Seasons vary greatly across the country—pack accordingly!

  • The sun is strong so we recommend a good sunscreen.

  • Power outlets use 230V with Type I plugs (the same as New Zealand).

  • Wi-Fi is widely available, but in remote areas, mobile coverage may be limited—consider purchasing a local SIM card for better connectivity.
